Random blurb

Chapter work done for the day. I just finished the last 3k words of this particular chapter and will be moving onto the next tomorrow. I actually have about half of the next chapter finished from a previous session (generally I write chapters in order, but occasionally I'll have an idea for a sequence from the outline and I'll go work on it and put it away for later), so I just need to revise a couple of segments and then finish it off over the weekend. Then I have the rest of the month to see what else I can get done.

I'm hoping to be done around Septemberish, then give myself a couple of months to do editing and revisions, have some friends read it, and possibly have it professionaly edited. Then I'll start shopping for an agent around the end of 2009 or early 2010, as well as moving onto book 2.

As a long-time hopeful, I've spent a lot of time watching the careers of others, and how they handled it. Most writers spend 3-5 years before they can graduate to full-time novel writing. Writing a novel takes time, and especially for your first one you aren't always 100% sure of how the process works. It's like with any job. The more you do it, the better you become, the faster you can do it. A full time novelist can put out a 200k novel in 6 months, or several 80-100k novels in a year, but it takes time to build up a reputation to be able to make enough from your novel sales to write full time. I fully expect to spend the next 3 years or so working freelance part time and working on novel writing part time. I don't expect my first novel to "rock the world" by any means. I may get lucky, and that would be great, but I'll be happy with moderate success.

It also depends on what you want to write. My grandmother knows a lady who writes what I consider /gag novels...that is, romance. But she churns out 3 to 4 of those things a year and you know what's really disturbing? She's making 80-90k a year writing those damn things. Nothing like talking about a throbbing member to generate cash!

Maybe I should start writing porn as well :)

That's my thought for the day. It's 1:30 and I have the rest of the afternoon off. Peanut butter jelly time!
