Run away! :) Next you're going to tell me I can't drink my wine from a plastic jug by the gallon, and have to use some kind of hoity toity wine glass... /grin

Lowering consumption makes sense - it's cheaper. I put forward the idea that recycling/being 'green' has a financial driver - as long as it's both A) Cheap, and B) Easy to do. Once A or B no longer apply, people (on the whole) would rather smack up a supermarket for their produce/herbs/spices.

That being said, the girls have their own little gardens out back, in filled up plastic pools of black earth and manure - peas and carrots, and rosemary and basil - they're so excited to see things growing. And I'm excited for them - it's a neat process, and I spent an hour explaining how a plant grows from a seed. :)

I'm a bit literal - she said that rainbows came from unicorns. I told her that rainbows are the result of refraction of light waves through water particles in the atmosphere - and although she gave me a blank look that doesn't make it LESS magical, having a scientific explanation. /grin

Yeah I read your post, and I can agree on one thing: when it's expensive and difficult, nobody wants to do it.

The thing I like about Europe is they make it really easy, and they spread awareness about it. In the States (and apparently in Canada too), they freaking charge you to recycle. You either have to pay for an extra bin, or they charge you extra for the fact that you separated it.

Here, for example, you can't walk more than 15 meters on the street without walking into 3 separated trash bins for paper and plastics, metals, glass, etc. It's taken care of by the city.

Don't get me wrong...I'm not about to stop using my AC or move into a peat-sod house, but I honestly believe every little bit counts, and we try to do what we can. But it's also VERY easy here compared to back in the States. It was an effort to recycle there, whereas here it's second nature.
